What is JPG file format?
JPG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group, also known as JPEG. JPG file type is defined as a format that uses lossy compression to minimize file size while maintaining acceptable file quality. Due to the JPG images’ lossy nature, they are considered the best option for everyday use as they occupy a small storage space.
Why Convert JPG Files?
JPG files are converted to other formats due to several reasons. Some of the reasons are as follows:
- Lossless compression – JPG supports lossy compression, which results in a loss of quality when compressed. Therefore, converting JPG files to lossless formats like PNG or TIFF preserves image quality during compression.
- Professional design compatibility – To easily edit elements, change colors, and manipulate layers, users always prefer to convert JPG files to CDR file format which is also compatible with CorelDRAW.
- Transparency support – JPG has no support for transparency. Therefore, when doing logos, graphics, or web design, JPG files are changed to formats like PNG that support transparency.
- Printing and Publishing – When printing/publishing, JPG files are converted to formats with better color depth and lossless quality like TIFF format
