    What is GIF file format?

GIF means Graphics Interchange Format. GIF is defined as a raster file format that supports static and animated images used for web graphics and simple animations. The GIF file type was created by Steve Wilhite in 1987 while working at CompuServe. The main objective of the GIF format is to facilitate the effective transmission and storage of images and short animations for early dial-up internet connections.

    Why Convert GIF Files?

GIF files are converted to other formats due to several reasons. Some of the reasons are as follows:

    1. Image quality – GIFs cause color banding because they use 8-bit color depth, making many users convert them to other formats that support higher color depth, like PNG and JPEG.
    2. Transparency support – When transparency is needed, users prefer PNG format over GIF, which allows 1-bit transparency.
    3. Compression efficiency – For still images, users prefer formats with better compression, like JPEG and WEBP, which reduce file sizes while maintaining image quality.
